Antidotal treatment for hydrofluoric acid (HF) burns.
This involves the application of a 2.5% calcium gluconate gel after immediate and abundant washing with running water for 15 to 20 minutes (ideally at the scene of the accident).
This gel should be applied in thick layers under an occlusive dressing every 3 hours for 48 hours.
The calcium gluconate will deeply chelate the fluoride ion, forming insoluble calcium fluoride and gluconic acid (a weak, metabolizable acid), thus enabling true neutralizing dialysis.
